  • WIPER BLADE

    Learn more about Wiper blades Master-Sport Automobiltechnik (MS) GmbH - operation method, diagnosis, causes of faults and replacement intervals.

    Wiper blades are elements of window cleaning system. They are designed for cleaning the glass from dirt and dust, as well as to ensure proper visibility in adverse weather conditions.

    Types of wiper blades

    • frame (there are summer, winter and all-season);
    • frameless;
    • hybrid.

    In addition, choosing the wiper blades for your car, pay attention to their size.

    The wipers construction

    The main element is a rubber wiper blade. It must be firmly pressed to the glass. In the framework structures this is achieved through the elastic plates and frame, in frameless - only by means of the plate.

    The composite frame in the frame structure is a rocker arms fixed to each other by hinges. They are held together with blades and elastic plates by clamps. In the winter version of the wipers the frame structure is placed in a protective rubber boot.

    In the frameless wipers the blade is imbedded into the solid plastic case. The wiper is pressed against the glass by a flat metal spring.

    In hybrid wipers the frame is enclosed in a plastic shell.

    Operation of wiper blades

    Recommendations:

    • If your car is on the move throughout the year, change wipers/rubber blades annually, preferably after winter. Many motorists prefer to replace the wipers or rubber blades more often: once every 4-6 months.
    • Regularly rinse the wipers with water, remove the dirt from the blades, in frame types clean joints from dirt, but in no case lubricate them.
    • Adjust washer nozzles: the whole area of the glass under the wipers must be moistened. Check the correctness of the adjustment at the speed of 60-80 kilometers per hour.
    • Make sure that the washer tank has antifreeze and not water long before the onset of frosts.
    • Do not operate the wiper at subzero temperatures until the heater warms up the whole glass. Thus you will significantly extend the life of rubber blades. At the same time it is better to sweep the snow from the glass first.
    • If the glass or wiper blades become greasy, degrease them with ten percent soda solution and rinse with warm water. You can also use car shampoo without protective components (such as wax). Just do not try to remove the contamination with petrol or solvent: working blade will quickly become unusable.

    Wiper faults

    • wear or damage of the rubber blades;
    • deformation;
    • loose or uneven fit of the wipers to the glass;
    • wear of frame hinges (in frame structures);
    • metal components corrosion (in framework structures);
    • shatter (wipers jerk and creak).

    Symptoms of wipers failure

    • after cleaning the glass there are dirty or wet areas;
    • glass is not enough cleaned on the perimeter;
    • wiper performance is accompanied by unpleasant sounds (whistle, squeak);
    • scratches on the glass.

    Causes of faulty wipers

    • end of service life;
    • severe pollution of rubber blades or frame elements;
    • low quality accessories;
    • using water as a washer at temperatures below 0 ° C;
    • loosening of wiper arms spring;
    • wipers work at too high vehicle speed;
    • improper installation, or installation of wiper parts of the wrong size;
    • failure of washer nozzles, and accordingly the movement of the wiper on a dry surface;
    • glass oiling.

    Diagnostics

    The part malfunction is easily identified. Damage, dirt and distortions can be seen with the naked eye.

    Therefore, seeing that the glass is cleaned improperly, inspect the wiper work surface to estimate their fit to the glass.

    Repair and replacement of wiper blades

    Sometimes you can recover the part’s operability by cleaning.

    In case when the parts failure is not due to pollution, it is necessary to change the wiper blades entirely, or (half cheaper) the blade rubber.

    Replacement is not difficult, and you can easily handle it on your own. Just remove unusable wiper from the lever, by pressing the clip or latch attachment, and then install the new one.

  • WIPER ARM

    Windscreen Cleaning System auto parts: Wiper arm windscreen washer Master-Sport Automobiltechnik (MS) GmbH - operation method, diagnosis, causes of faults and replacement intervals.

    Wiper arms are a component of the wiper. It connects the wiper motor with a rubber strip. Wiper arms pass motor force to the rubber strips in order they to move with the necessary frequency. On the market there is a great variety of wiper arms, because almost every car needs its own model. Wiper arms can be damaged in the result of an accident or because of vandalism. If the wiper arm lays incorrectly on the surface of the window, it is improperly installed.

    It doesn’t take too much time to replace the broken wiper arm. In wiper motor there is a joint to which the wiper arm is attached. It is necessary to disconnect the attachment in such a way it to be possible to replace the damage wiper arm. Then you need to fasten a new wiper arm. After this you need to attach rubber strip on the other end of the wiper arm. An ideal variant is a complete wiper arm and rubber strip replacement. Test it and make sure that you have properly replaced the wiper arm. While testing the wiper arm, window must be wet or it is necessary to wet it with the help of window washer.

    You need to buy an original spare part the wiper arm to function correctly. Manufacturers provide neat characterizations of car models that need an original spare part. Customer must pay attention to this information. If you install non-original wiper arms, this can result in a breakdown. Do you want to order brake drum, damper strut, clutch pressure plate, flange, radiator grille, muffler, cabin air filter, transmission mount, and other spare car parts? Then our online store is your helper, as there is a wide choice of spare car parts in our online store.

    How to identify a faulty wiper arm

    To assess the state of the component, it should first be inspected. If visual diagnostics has shown that the component is rusty or deformed, it is to be replaced. Then lift the wiper arm off the windshield and check the arm fasteners.

    Special attention is to be paid to the slots of the wiper arm. They should not be dirty or damaged. To inspect the wiper arms more carefully, they are to be dismantled.

    The average service life of the components may reach three years. The service life is directly influenced by the operating conditions and the frequency of operation.

    You may notice that the wiper arms need diagnostics by the following symptoms:

    • wipers move with different amplitude, or with jerks;
    • the windshield is not cleaned completely;
    • the wipers vibrate during movement.

    The reasons of wiper arms malfunction

    Malfunction of the wiper arms may occur due to their wear or improper installation. If the slots in the arms are worn out, the components will run erratically, which entails wiper blades slipping. Incorrect operation of wiper arms may also be a result of deep rust, over-tightening or, on the contrary, loosening the fastening nut.

    Skewing of the wiper arms results in their jamming. Wiper blades of excessive length may get stuck, thus causing malfunction of the wipers mechanism.

    The malfunction is to be eliminated immediately after it is detected, as poor visibility is the reason of road accidents.

    Repairing and replacing wiper arms

    The wiper arm is repairable only if the component is deformed. Repair can only temporarily fix the problem, and does not cancel the necessity of replacement.

    To dismantle the component, slide off the wiper cover, and loosen the hex nut. It is not recommended to unscrew it completely, since it is not always possible to align it with the grooves without assistance. Then swing the wiper arm and pull it out.

    When installing a serviceable component, be sure to fasten it properly. The tightening torque of hex nut should be 20 Nm. To measure it, use a torque wrench.

Windscreen cleaning system car parts Master-Sport Automobiltechnik (MS) GmbH - all important information about operating method, mounting, diagnostics and service life

A wiper system has a very important function: it removes rain, snow and dirt from the surface of the windscreen, providing good visibility for the driver and the ability to travel by car in bad weather. It also helps to keep the rear window clean. Road safety directly depends on the performance of this system. Therefore, driving in rain and snow with faulty wipers is prohibited by law.

Design of the wiper system

The wiper system includes the following components:

  • Switch – in most cars this is located on the steering column. The driver uses it to operate the system or select operating modes. It also turns on the washer jets.
  • Electric motor – this generates torque that is transferred to the windscreen wiper arms and then the blades.
  • Linkage – this is a system of arms that transforms the rotation of the electric motor into the pivoting motion of the wiper arms.
  • Wiper arms – these transmit the force from the linkage to the blades.
  • Blades – their working part is a rubber element which directly contacts the windscreen surface.
  • Washer fluid reservoir – this is installed under the bonnet to hold the washer fluid.
  • Pump – this pumps the fluid and feeds it under pressure to the nozzles.
  • Nozzles – these are installed on the bonnet and spray washer fluid onto the windscreen.

Maintenance tips

  • Do not allow wiper blades to operate when the windscreen is dry; otherwise, they’ll scratch the glass and their rubber parts will be damaged.
  • Adjust the wipers so that the blades don’t reach beyond the edges of the windscreen.
  • Never turn on the wipers if the blades are frozen to the windscreen. You should wait until the ice melts a little. It is advisable to remove it by hand with a scraper.
  • It is recommended to lubricate wiper blade pivot pins and wiper linkage pivot shafts occasionally.
  • Dilute concentrated windscreen washer fluid in the proportion recommended by the manufacturer. Adding too much water is dangerous as the fluid may freeze when it’s cold.
  • Don’t leave your wipers up when you park. This weakens the springs in the wiper arms.

Symptoms of malfunction

When the rubber elements are worn or the blades do not adhere to the windscreen tightly enough, the surface is cleaned poorly. Dirt, moisture, and streaks may remain on the glass. Occasionally, the wiper system may produce unusual noise during operation, such as knocking and squeaking. This often results from faulty pivots. If the wipers operate in one mode only or fail to turn on at all, this means either the electric motor or the steering column switch has a malfunction. Faulty washer elements usually have one common symptom: no fluid supply to the windscreen. In some cases, if the wiper system is leaking, you may notice puddles under the car after it’s been parked for a while.

Causes of malfunction

All parts of the wiper system should be correctly adjusted to ensure its proper operation. For example, if the arms are incorrectly installed, the blades will not return to their initial position after switching off. If they reach beyond the windscreen edges during operation, the electric motor might break. Trying to turn the wipers on when the blades are frozen to the glass produces a similar effect. When rubber seals are worn out, water and dirt get inside the hinges, causing them to rust, wear out, and become jammed.

As for the washer jets, using pure water in winter is the most dangerous thing for them. If it freezes and you try to turn on the jets, the pump might fail.
