    How to detect the poly-V-belt malfunction

    The condition of the belts should be checked after every 10-15 thousand km of mileage, together with every oil replacement. First, inspect the component. If it is significantly damaged, install a new one. In case of few small cracks, replacement of the component is not required. However, if cracks are less than 10-20 mm apart from each other, the belt is severely deteriorated. Also, check whether the pulleys are not fouled with dirt and foreign objects.

    You may notice that the poly-V-belt requires diagnostics by the following symptoms:

    • noise and whistling are heard from the component when driving;
    • the belt slips, vibrates, or gets twisted;
    • the reverse side of the component looks shiny and glossy;
    • the engine gets overheated;
    • elements of ribs are absent;
    • smudges and grease marks are visible on the surface of the component;
    • grooves in the ribs are clogged;
    • edges of the belt are damaged;
    • the battery does not hold charge;
    • the base layer of the belt is damaged or torn;
    • fibers on the surface of the belt are cracked.

    The reasons of poly-V-belt malfunction

    The poly-V-belt is subjected to heavy loads. Partly premature wear of the component is caused by high temperature in the engine compartment, as well as continuous movement. These factors are the reasons for appearance of cracks on the component and for detachment of rubber fragments.

    The degree of belt tension is a critical factor. Insufficient tension may cause severe vibration and abrasion of the component, excessive tension may cause rupture. Incorrect installation of the component, in particular, its location outside the pulley, results in detachment of the ribs from the base. Belt damage may also result from its installation on worn or misaligned pulleys. Besides, the reason of breakage of base cord threads and of the belt itself may be ingress of foreign objects in the pulley.

    Replacing the poly-V-belt

    The maximum service life of the component is 4 years. After that period, a new component is to be installed. A damaged component is not subject to repair. Before removing the belt, remove the top of the air filter and the mass airflow sensor. Then remove the solenoid valve, and remove the bottom of the air filter. To remove the belt, loosen the tensioner. During the installation of a new component, place it in the middle of the pulleys, and unscrew the tensioner screw. At the end, install all components in the reverse order.

  • TIMING BELT

    Synchronous belt Master-Sport Automobiltechnik (MS) GmbH - operation method, diagnosis, causes of faults and replacement intervals.

    Timing belt set is a part for a definite timing belt model. It could also be named a set. In the car part catalogue you can define the right composition, depending on the model. So, it is very important to know your car model. It is preferably to study the service manual again. Timing belts have toothed formations. They make the belts more rough and nonslipping. Usually they are made of plastic. Also polyurethane or neopren combined with fibreglass is used.

    Belts are used in that places where there is drive and transmission of forces. Often they are a part of the system they are integrated in. Together with timing belts are directly coupled tensioner roller, tensioner, guide/deflection roller, belt pulley, belt tensioner or timing belt cover. These parts are often linked together in terms of function, because they are a part of the belt drive complex. For instance, guide roller guides the timing belt; deflection roller moves it in a certain direction.

    If the timing belt is broken or there is damage, it is risky to drive the car. In case the belt is broken, the whole system becomes faulty. It is necessary quickly to remedy the defects. Usually timing belt is situated in the engine area and it is easy to reach it. Stull, sometimes it is necessary to dismantle some parts to replace the belt. If you have experience, you can do it by yourself. All necessary car parts you will find in our online shop. In addition to the timing belt we offer you joint disks, interior blower, suspensions, air conditioner and other car parts.

    How to detect malfunctions of the Cam Belt?

    First, perform sound diagnosis, which includes attentive listening to the sounds in the area of the timing gear during operation. Malfunctions are manifested by rattling, knocking, rasping, and clicking sounds. If extraneous noises are heard, inspect the timing belt and adjacent elements.

    During inspection, pay attention to the state of the belt working surface. It should not have cracks, burrs, torn places, or traces of oil, and sides and teeth should be free of cuts, recesses and scuffs.

    In addition to visible defects, malfunctions of rollers are manifested by free play or noise when they are rotated manually.

    Routine examination should be performed after every 50-75 thousand kilometers of mileage. Many car owners entrust diagnostics to a service station, since in order to access the timing belt, elements of the system are to be dismantled.

    You may notice that the Timing belt needs diagnostics, by the following symptoms:

    • the exhaust is blackish;
    • during operation, the engine vibrates excessively;
    • during operation, strong noise is heard from the timing mechanism;
    • valve timing is disrupted;
    • reduced engine power.

    The reasons of the timing belt kit malfunctions

    Premature failure of the Synchronous belt may occur for a number of reasons. One of them is improper installation of the belt, which reduces the service life of the elements. Failure to comply with the recommendations of the manufacturer in terms of tightening the fasteners results in rollers misalignment. Fasteners may also be tightened incorrectly if repair is performed on the overheated or overcooled engine.

    Loss of tightness in the engine seals often results in ingress of lubricant onto the belt. The material used for the component is sensitive to oils, so it quickly fails. Loose fit of the timing belt protective cover may be the reason of foreign bodies getting into the mechanism, which will in turn cause damage to the belt.

    Replacing the timing belt kit

    Timing belt failure is removed by replacement. Even if the component looks normal, it is recommended to replace it on a scheduled basis, after every 60 to 90 thousand kilometers of mileage. Note that the timing belt should be replaced together with other parts of the timing gear, rollers in particular.

    The Toothed belt may be replaced at a service station, or by yourself. Most car owners prefer to entrust replacement to specialists of a service station, due to complexity of this work.

  • V-BELTS

    V-belt set Master-Sport Automobiltechnik (MS) GmbH - operation method, diagnosis, causes of faults and replacement intervals.

    Poly-V belt is a V-belt with longitudinal edges. This increases the frictional force. Poly-V belt is used to start the generator. Also it is used for water pump, servo-assisted steering gear, and fan. V-belts are made from rubber. Inside the belt there is a steel rod that is responsible for consistency of operation.

    A common cause of failure is the poly-V belt break. Diagnosis of the faultinesses is carried out depending on the location of breakage. If the poly-V belt fails, it is easy to determine the cause. Before break formation there are characteristic noises caused by wear. It is necessary to replace the belt to avoid failure. You should always watch over the belt state. Defective poly-V belt indicates engine overheating.

    The main poly-V belt starts the generator. It is not difficult to replace the belt, but it is hard-to-reach. First, you need to sort the tension out, and then to remove the damaged belt. When attaching the new V- belt, tension should be the same as pulleys’ overloading is possible. It is necessary to test the belt when the engine is on. In our catalogue you find many car parts: generators, moldings, horns, stub axles, parking brake cable, rear-view mirrors and ABS sensors. In our Internet shop you will buy quality goods and save money.

    How to detect the V-belt malfunction

    Diagnostics may be performed without help of specialists of a service center. Start with removing the cover and loosening the fasteners of the pump. Then inspect the belt for external faults and check the extent of its tensioning. When pressed, its maximum allowable deflection should be 5 mm. The surface of the component should not have any defects, or traces of fuel or lubricant. If the component has stains of oil, it should be replaced, and the oil seals are to be inspected. The alternator tensioner bolt and all fasteners are also to be diagnosed. It is recommended to inspect the belt after every 1,000 km of mileage.

    You may notice that the V-belt requires diagnostics by the following symptoms:

    • operation of the engine is accompanied by extraneous sounds;
    • the engine gets overheated at idle speed;
    • signs of wear are visible on the surface of the belt;
    • the cold engine operation is unstable.

    The reasons of V-belt malfunction

    The most likely reason of V-belt breakage is its incompatibility with the power of the drive. The component may also break due to jamming of the drive, or under the action of foreign objects. Besides, improper installation of the belt with excessive force applied may result in cords damage.

    Abrasion of the side faces of the component is most often the consequence of its insufficient tension. Also, the reason may lie in pulleys misalignment, their insufficient diameter and mismatch of the width of the pulleys to the belt.

    The base of the V-belt may be damaged due to sharp temperature changes, or exposure to chemicals. This entails loss of stiffness of the material. Also, cracks may appear due to incorrectly installed or non-conforming outer roller.

    Belt twisting and slipping may be caused by its insufficient tensioning. Due to excessive vibration, the component changes its position. Belts are often twisted due to pulleys misalignment or damage, and ingress of foreign objects into their grooves.

    The premature wear of the components is often associated with their poor quality. It is recommended to use belts from the same manufacturer, and replace them together. Use of components with different characteristics may result in their uneven stretching and damage.

    Replacing the V-belt

    The V-belt is not subject to repair; it is replaced immediately, since a new component is relatively inexpensive. Since replacement does not require any special equipment or skills, you may be able to replace the component on your own. Before replacing, remove the cover, loosen the adjusting bolt and the pump fastenings in the cooling system. Then carefully remove the old belt, trying to avoid damaging the tension rollers, and install a new one.

    At the end, remember to tighten the bolt and adjust the belt tension.
